Well, I think I’ve finally finished my home solar project. After doing a lot of reading, I believe I have an otherwise decent and safe system. I tried to design it around the NEC’s Article 690 as much as “practical”. I’ve added additional components, and changed a few things around. It’s been an enjoyable and worthwhile learning experience. I read “free” books on design, operation & maintenance, and safety, along with referencing the National Electrical Code in relation to PV systems. After playing with my new Grid Tie inverter, I’m convinced that it’s a good addition to any system that produces 500+ Watts of power. My system is not the best and my way is not the only way to implement a home system, but I hope my ideas helps someone along the way. For those that wish to truly learn about Stand-Alone PV system design etc, the following are excellent free books I downloaded and used:
1.) Stand-Alone Photovoltaic Systems – (by Sandia National Labs)
2.) Maintenance And Operation of Stand-Alone Photovoltaic Systems (Sandia)
3.) Working Safely with Photovoltaic Systems (Sandia National Labs)
4.) Photovoltaic Power Systems And the 2005 NEC: Suggested Practices

Simply google the titles and download the pdf’s, and your good to go. Good Fortune, and have fun.

This video gives a little more detail on my current solar renewable energy system which now has an Interlock installed. I’ve added 2 more batteries for a total of 7.9kW, and an Interlock Kit from www.interlock.com, also some additional safety features such as a cover for my aux outlet and a fire/smoke alarm which is not shown. The Interlock will allow me to power the entire house as opposed to only six circuits with the transfer switch. Using both the transfer switch and the Interlock gives me the flexibility to bring my office or other circuits off the grid during a normal day to day, and power the entire house during a major power outage. Works great, It’s important to have an electrician doing the install. The link to the latest schematic is below:

Beautiful orrery(solar system model) avaiable in : http://www.orrerystore.com/orrery_sale1.html .short video describing a small solar power system that i set up at my house. it consists of twelve 1 amp solar panels (15 watts each for a total of 180 watts of power – per hour). i use it to run all lights (CFL's), fans, tv's, and stereos in the house. also the microwave, coffee maker, blender, can opener, sandwich grill, toaster, vacuum, computer and anything else i can think of. run time for lights/fans only is approx 8 hours. add in vacuuming, microwaving or toaster along with lights, tv and the fans and the run time is reduced to 4-5 hours a day. i bought solar panels, inverter (1000 watt) and killowatt meter at Harbor Freight tools, the batteries (deep cycle) from walmart and the battery cables from checker auto. total cost was about $1200 to $1300 For the latest including EXTRA PICS and INFO. – Click on the “WEBSITE LINK” from my youtube channel page.
