This is my first attempt at setting up a solar system at home. It is based in my dads shed and has the following characteristics:
12v, 70Ah Deep cycle battery
20W Monocrystaline panel
300W Mains Inverter
12v/20w CFL
In future it will be upgraded to have a 100-200w Panel & 1-2000w inverter.
Please comment, this set-up is in Wales, Uk and cost a total of about £200 to do.

Upgrade to the solar shed, have just fitted a huge 220AH deep cycle battery weighing almost 60KG. This gives us a total of 290AH capacity between the two deep cycle batteries, or around 150AH of usable capacity only draining the battery bank down to 40-50%.
All major wiring is 8-AWG, including the battery links. The system is setup in parallel giving 12v@290AH.

This is a little update I took on my new video phone. We are now making more power than we use, so have a wire running into the house to run items up to 300w such as a fan. Next upgrades are a bigger normal inverter to run a mower from the system, we will also be getting a grid-tie inverter to wire to the house that can be switched to bypass the batteries and use just the panels when the batteries are fully charged.
So when the batteries are low, they charge…when full the power gets directed to our in-house grid.
