Electricity is something that we cannot exclude form any part of our lives. The increasing population is putting great pressure on the system all over the world. There are so many countries looking for new sources of electricity. Solar panel can be a great source of electricity and meet the demand of the increasing population.
Sun is the most powerful source of energy. The amount of solar power delivered by sun is enormous and it is more than we will ever need. But sun delivers energy which also contains heat and water. We cannot use the energy directly to power a computer. This is why we use solar panels. Solar panels can help us to refine the solar energy and convert it into usable electricity. It is found that if we can build solar panels to cover even 1% of Sahara desert, we will be able to generate enough electricity to run the whole world.
You can build solar panels for your home and become self dependent for the supply of electricity. Moreover, as a member of planet earth, we have a duty towards the Mother Nature. We have to keep her alive for keeping the human race alive. Solar panels are environment friendly and you can contribute towards the nature and at the same time meet your family’s electricity demand if you build your own solar panel.
If you build solar panel for your home, you will be contributing in keeping the environment free from harmful gases. Producing electricity by using Solar panel can reduce the expense of electricity to a great extent. So considering the reduction in expenditure and the environmental aspect of solar panels it should be the first choice for any one. But there is a major problem when you plan to make solar panel. There is a handsome initial expense that you will have to go through. But most of the governments are encouraging people to start using solar panels and they are ready to give you financial support if you want to build your own solar panel. If you can generate more electricity than your family needs and if you are connected to a grid, the authority will pay you for the extra amount of electricity. You can also store the extra energy for using in the overcast days.
So there is no reason you should not try to build your own solar panel and contribute towards the greater good of our planet.

This is part of my 8th grade year-long project. I did my project on Solar and Wind energy. For the project we were required to have a visual on our presentation table. So i built a solar circuit with a 150 watt light bulb powering a small LED light, and a small computer fan.

I also built A Savonius wind turbine that generated about 1.5 volts. I plan on taking a video of my turbine in action, but i need to purchase a voltmeter first so i can prove that it actually makes electricity.

I had both my wind turbine and my solar setup on a table in my schools cafeteria. I used a small house fan to turn my turbine and a lab light to power my solar part. The solar part was different then it was in this video because i had it all mounted on a piece of plywood.

Gathering my supplies for my visuals and building them probably took only 1 month out of the 5 months i spent on the whole project. The other 4 months i spent gathering over 150 facts on the topic, vocab words, writing a journal on my progress, making a scrapbook of articles and pictures, and making a TriFold to put on my table.

The presentation was open to the public for 2 hours, and in that two hours i was swamped with people, asking questions, sharing stories, looking at my turbine and solar stuff…it was great. we were supposed to be able to leave our table and look around at my classmates projects, but i never got a chance to like everyone else.

But i had so much fun doing it and i learned ALOT! plus, i got an A!

This vid shows the various steps in planning and having a company (Real Goods Carlson) install photovoltaic solar electric power in my rear yard in San Diego; definitely more challenging than a roof installation. My rationale for this: reduce my carbon footprint, buy / own my energy (like I do my house), help address CA’s energy shortfall and take advantage of the state and US government incentives for early adopters to save on the installation.

I just uploaded it to Repower America:
