It is generally thousands of dollars for a realistic system. Much of it depends on how much electricity you use, and where the house is located.

If you want a very crude number, to decide whether to look further, about $10k – $20k net after rebates. For that, you get a system that returns $500 – $2500 worth of electricity a year, depending on where you live. If you feel comfortable putting the money up front, or have the means to finance it, then check with a local solar installer in your area. Get several bids, they’re free, and installers vary widely in price.

It would definitely depend on the square footage you want covered, the suggested amount of panels for your electric consumption, etc. The area you live in may also make the price fluctuate.
Remember that, if you are the one who owns the house, you could be eligible for the tax credit of up to $2000 for "green" home improvements.

I would guess $10K to $20K, depending on the size of the system. I had it priced out for my house a while back just to find out and it was some ridiculous amount of money.
