Installing the Solar Thermal Tubes on the roof of the Middlebury College Solar Decathlon team’s solar-powered house was an exciting moment for the team this summer. These hot-water tubes will heat all of the water needed for home when it is completed and running.

I’ve been looking online and the only electrical heaters I have found are plug ins. I’ve done some reading but have never done a project like this. I’m trying to heat an outdoor tort house without plugging it in to a power source. There’s tons of videos for solar powered homes, but none for a much smaller scale. All I need is 75-150 watts that last through the night.
Can’t help you with the heater, but maybe you could get away with just heavily insulating the dog house, and providing a door to keep wind out.
Also, is it a big dog? Just the dog’s natural fur might be enough.

Of all the microgeneration technologies available in the UK, solar PV is proving to be the most popular and fastest growing. There are many myths surrounding solar photovoltaic systems, so lets explore some frequently expressed concerns.
Solar PV panels do not require direct sunlight to work, they will still generate electricity on a cloudy day, so come rain or shine, your system will generate clean, green energy.
Solar PV is supported by the government’s feed in tariff, which obliges energy companies to make guaranteed, tax free, index linked payments to homeowners for generating electricity from renewable systems. Homeowners are paid for every unit of electricity they generate irrespective of whether the homeowner uses the electricity or feeds it back to the grid.
The feed in tariff is designed to pay the owner of a property fitted with an MCS accreditted PV system a guaranteed index linked income for25 years. If the property is sold for any reason, the new owner acquires the system, effectively converting the remaining income back into a lump sum for you or your estate.
So no value is lost if you move home.
Solar PV fuctions best on roofs that are facing south, south east or south west.
But as they can generate energy even on cloudy days, most properties are suitable unless your home is overshadowed by large trees or buildings. Most roofs are strong enough to accommodate a solar PV system, and our technical surveyor will check this for you.
Solar PV has been granted permitted development status which means that planning permission is not normally required, however if you live in an area of outstanding natural beauty, a conservation area or in a listed building, you may need permission.
The Energy Conservation Group has an in house planning department which will handle this process on your behalf.
Solar PV delivers impressive reliablility and longevity. For example, BP, the oil company who are actively developing renewable energy sources, recently found a failure rate of 0.13% in over 2 million panels in a variety of locations over an eight year period.

Perhaps you visited this three-level home at 17206 W. 17th Place in 2009, when it was on the Solar Tour of Homes.
