You will use solar cells, wood plate, soldering iron, solder, flux, and tabbing to make a panel. These items are easy to get from local stores and you would not need any special tool. Even a novice can make it without problem.Solar panels are the wave of the future! So where do we start? How do you get your hands on the material to start building your own solar panels? Well lets first find out what solar panels are. That way you at least sound educated when you pitch this to your family!
Solar cells are almost always made from silicon, that is the same material we use to make computer chips. Silicon is one of the worlds most common elements, and is a leading component of sand and many kinds of rocks. A solar cell is built in layers, with two layers of silicon separated by a thin layer of insulating material. All three layers work together and convert sunlight into electricity.
When sunlight hits the solar cell, it produces an electric charge. Like a battery, the charge is positive on one side of the cell, and negative on the other side. Connecting a wire to the positive and to the negative side will allow electricity to flow. This flow, or current, can be used to power a small light bulb, turn an electric motor, or recharge a battery.
Broken solar cells can be bought for cheap money, and THEY STILL WORK! That is what I recommend. Of course you will need framing material to mount to the top of your house and two pieces of glass. The rest is pretty simple, hook your panels together, positive to positive and negative to negative, that way you get only 2 wires when you are done.Take these two wires and connect them to your power inverter and connect the power inverter to the electrical grid to your house. These steps seem hard but can be broken up into much simpler and easier steps.

Go to your search engine and type in Solar Power . Then you can pick out exactly what you want from the hundreds out there. Way to many ways to go to start recommending something I have no idea what you need.

I need to know what I will need other than solar panals and a wind turbine

Hey Iceman, the best place to start is Home Power Magazine, it’s the only periodical that gets into the nuts and bolts of home grown electricity. I will include the link below. We started reading it 12 years ago, now our home is completely powered by the wind and sun. There are some great non profit groups worth looking into as well, list below.

I don’t now if you are a DIY kind of guy or you generally hire jobs out. Either way, you’ll want to be well informed before you spend a lot of time and money on this. There are tons of energy fairs going on in different states and countries, if you can get to one, you will know a great deal more about the subject than if you spent 6 months reading up on it. In the back of each issue of Home Power there is a list of fairs coming up. We went to one in Wisconsin 11 years ago and bought most of our initial equipment on the spot. If you are into DIY projects, I would suggest starting with something small, like one 50 watt panel, a couple golf cart batteries and an inverter from the auto parts store. It isn’t hard to hook up, and then you’ll be able to see it all working right in front of you. You can later add meters or charge controllers, and you’ll be producing some power you can use right now. We did the same thing, and now we have 12 volt outlets in each room of our home, and all the cabinet lighting in the kitchen works straight off the small battery bank.

There are basically two types if installations. The stand alone uses solar and wind to charge batteries, that feed the inverter, that feeds the home. The intertie uses solar/wind to feed directly to a synchronous inverter that feeds back into the grid. During the day, or windy nights, the meter spins backwards, and at night, it spins forward. At the end of the month, you are charged only for the difference. It is using the grid as a battery, so you don’t need to buy any. Only con to the intertie is that if the grid goes down, your system shuts down too, so you can find yourself at home on a sunny day with a solar array you don’t have access to and now power in the home. Either way, a small system will always work, even if the power is out, so at least you will have some power in all conditions.

The editors at Home Power liked thesmall system idea so much they did an article on it, if you subscribe, you can look it up under "Starting Small." You need to do a loads list that lists how many watts each of those components draw, and for how many hours a day. You also need to consider if any of them run on 220V instead of 110V (in the US), often the water heater and pump are 220V. Once you know how many watt hours you need a day, you can enter it in the off-grid calculator at http://www.altestore.com/store/calculators/off_grid_calculator/.

Alternately, if you are buying electricity from the electric grid now, you can look at your electric bill and see how many kilowatt hours (kwh) a month you use, and divide it by 30 days to see how much you use a day. Then enter that number in the off-grid calculator.

If you do have access to the electric grid, it doesn’t make sense to disconnect from the grid, it is less expensive to continue with them, sell them any extra you make and buy back any more that you need. You would use them as your battery bank.

Also, and most importantly, instead of using solar electric to heat your water, you should get solar water heating instead of using electricity to heat it. It’s much more efficient and less expensive. You should also be using CFL or LED lights instead of regular incandescent lights. It’ll save you a fortune.
